On the one hand Demarginy is impressed by artists who have decades of experience in different genres, created dozens of variations inside each one of them and nonetheless always stayed true to themselves. Thereby it is about virtuosity and skills. On the other hand creating the own vocabulary of expression and play with it along the artistic pathway, demonstrates the unique signature of an artist. To Demarginy musicians like Serge Gainsbourg, Miles Davis, Errol Garner or artists such as Roy Lichtenstein Frank Stella are such sources of inspiration.
The musical flow permeates this series, which De Marginy considers jazzy or classic. The titles of the art works Intensity, Variety, Balance, Progress and Consistency accordingly represent key characteristics that the artist connected to this topic while creating them.
Every vertical brushstroke in Demarigny’s paintings represents one element that operates though the collectivity on the canvas. The main characteristics of his series are single vertical brushstrokes and the element of repetition. The artist is always surprised how the ingenuity of the individual brushstroke melts in a powerful expression. The very mechanic method of applying the brushstrokes then results in a synthesis that appears organic.
