La Grande Salle

For the young Swiss artist Louane exhibiting at the Kolly Gallery is a big challenge. Nevertheless he thought to himself „go big or go home“ and entitled his exhibition La Grande Salle. Kolly Gallery is pleased to present Louane with his solo exhibition in Zurich. The pop up exhibition lasts from January 17 to January 19, 2019.

The exhibition is multilayered, clever and conceptual, as it incorporates various concepts from art history to communication strategies to theories of aesthetic and non-aesthetic. Quite early Louane has been inspired and fascinated by Marcel Duchamp, at that point he realized the power of art and communication. He understood that communicating art can generate certain feelings and he devoted himself to detect these strategies. Similar to Duchamp he would like to explore, question and challenge the role of spacial contexts. Therefore Louane’s aim is to a study structural communication meticulously in order to achieve non-structural communication through his art. In other words: «Learn about the rules perfectly to start breaking them» (Louane, 2018).

Regarding the exhibition pieces three main series will be presented. The font based white on white paintings as well as shadow glasses. Besides of the intricate and interlaced font aesthetic, whose roots lie in graffiti, the artist plays with the idea of appearance and disappearance as well as the interplay within the context of Kolly Gallery which obviously is the white cube. The colors defining his paintings will be different white tones and shades that partially reflect in the the dark (phosphorescent colors). The scratched glass pieces represent the interplay between lights, shadows and reflections. The main intention is that the artworks fuse and confound with their environment and are emphasized by working with their contrasts.

Another core piece of his artistic practice are the cartoon-like illustrations. He reflects different cornerstones and key moments of his life through playful and funny comic scenes. The peculiarity in his cartoon universe is the embodiment of animals. So each person contained in it, corresponds to an certain animal. Louane strolls through the world with a sensitive mind and is therefore daily inspired by different impressions, encounters and life situations through friends, family and last but not least work. In the end, the simple things in life nourish his artistic practice.

The exhibition is accompanied by Louane’s book release entitled Transatlantique, which thematizes the artist’s exhibition trips between Paris and New York. In this case Louane followed his great inspiration Duchamp and the idea of ready made by taking on the same title as Duchamp’s travel diary (Transatlantique, 1915-1955).

Louane, the thoughtful rebel uses the practices of graffiti in a visual as well as conceptual level and reinforces his art by strategies of communication.
