Absurd, comical and colorful are Michel FR’s Islands. His extremely colorful and vivid paintings on wood are presented in the new exhibition entitled Islands from 29th March to 3rd April 2021 at Kolly Gallery Zurich.
Michel FR’s world is populated with never before seen characters, monsters and creatures without names. No matter how morbid, surreal or absurd the characters are, they always appear endearing, positive and and not least somehow full of humor. The absurdity gives the artist a total freedom in his artistic creations.
Michel FR loves to paint and draw on any material he can find, but he has a preference for cardboard and wood. He is fascinated by those materials, because they are often old and marked by time. Therefore, the series Islands is made on parts of wooden cabinets that he found in the basement of a school. Especially when he is working on wood, he likes to leave unpainted parts where you can feel the grain and the structure as well as see the support.
